Q1: I have been asked to apply for a CRB check. How do I go about this?

You will need to speak to the person who told or asked you to apply for a CRB check. They will be able to let you know when and how to make the application. Organisations that require CRB checks as part of job or licensing application must be registered directly with the CRB or use the services of an organisation that is registered with the CRB.

Q2: Are CRB checks compulsory?

The CRB itself does not make its checks compulsory; however, other government legislation may make them compulsory in certain circumstances e.g. for those working in schools and care homes.

Q3: How do I find out what level of CRB check I need?

There are two levels of CRB check available, Standard and Enhanced. Standard checks are primarily available for anyone involved in working with children or vulnerable adults, as well as certain other occupations and entry into professions as specified in the Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Enhanced checks are available to anyone involved in regularly caring for, training, supervising or being in sole charge of children or vulnerable adults. It is also available for certain licensing purposes and judicial appointments.

Q4: How do I make an application for a CRB check?

The person who asked you to apply for a CRB check should be able to provide you with an application form or tell you how to apply.

Q5: How do I get an application form?

CRB application forms are available only to organisations that are registered directly with the CRB or who use the services of an organisation that is registered with the CRB. The CRB does not currently offer en electronic application form or a form that can be downloaded from the internet. If you need a form you will need to speak to the person who told or asked you to apply for a CRB check.

Q6: How long does a CRB check take?

The CRB aims to process 90% of Standard checks in 10 days and 90% of Enhanced checks in 4 weeks.

Q7: How long are CRB checks valid for?

CRB checks have no period of validity as the information on the Disclosure is a snap shot in time at the point that the checks were completed.

Q8: Why is my CRB check taking a long time to complete?

An Enhanced CRB check involves an additional check over and above those that we carry out for a Standard check. This is a check with the police of their records that are not held on the police national computer. The police need to make sure that they have carried out a comprehensive and thorough search of their records and will not sacrifice the accuracy of their checks for speed. As a result some checks do take longer than the anticipated 4 weeks.

Q9: I am self-employed; can I apply for a CRB check on myself?

No. The current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check on themselves.

Q10: Can I recheck my staff and if so how often?

Organisations can determine their own rechecking policy.
